Il devient rapidement l'un des plus grands artistes de Rock'n'Roll au côté d'Elvis Presley et de Jerry Lee Lewis. Puis il enchaîne les tubes et devient un des chanteurs américains les plus engagés pour une réforme du système carcéral. Il compose « Cry, Cry, Cry, Folsom Prison Blues et I Walk the Line » qui ont marqué toute une génération. C'est le seul artiste à avoir été introduit à la fois au Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, au Country Music Hall of Fame et au Songwriters Hall of Fame.
