Nomes et toparchies en Égypte gréco-romaine - Réalités administratives et géographie religieuse d’Éléphan

Unités régionales et administratives, les nomes et toparchies découpaient l'Égypte Ptolémaïque et romaine en une multitude de régions et districts permettant son contrôle total par l'État. Ce système, utilisé au plus tard dès l'Ancien Empire, a connu d'importantes modifications tout au long de l'histoire du pays. Toutefois, les remaniements semblent encore s'intensifier durant la période gréco-romaine.

Cet ouvrage propose d'analyser le découpage territorial de l'Égypte, entre Éléphantine et Memphis, et ses fluctuations dès le début du III^e siècle av. J.-C., jusqu'à la fin du III^e siècle apr. J.-C., au moment où les réformes de Dioclétien modifient encore le système. Parallèlement à cette étude du découpage administratif, la géographie religieuse présentée dans les listes et processions de nomes de cette époque tardive est examinée en détail afin de mettre en évidence les influences réciproques entre ces deux modes de perception du paysage égyptien. Les interactions constatées dans cette étude, même minimes, permettent de nuancer la fossilisation de la géographie sacerdotale et de revenir ainsi sur un lieu commun en égyptologie qui soutient que la distinction est de mise entre ces deux géographies, en particulier pendant les époques ptolémaïque et romaine.

Regional and administrative units, nomes and toparchies divided Ptolemaic and Roman Egypt into a multitude of regions and districts, allowing the total control of the state over the land. Used since at least the Old Kingdom, this system has undergone important changes throughout the history of the country. However, the pace and nature of the remodelling seem to intensify during the Greco-Roman period.

This book analyses the territorial division of Egypt, between Elephantine and Memphis, and its fluctuations from the third century BC to the end of the third century AD, when the reforms of Diocletian changed the system again. In parallel to the study of the country's administrative division, the religious geography outlined in the nomes lists and processions of this late period is investigated in detail in order to highlight the reciprocal influences between these two modes of perception of the Egyptian landscape. The interactions observed in this study, even minimal ones, make it possible to nuance the fossilisation of priestly geography and thus to reconsider the traditional Egyptological cliché which claims that a strong distinction is to be made between these two geographies, especially during the Ptolemaic and Roman eras.
