Doctor Atomic est considéré comme un des chefs d'oeuvre de John Adams, et comme un des opéras majeurs du XXIe siècle. Créé en 2005 à San Francisco, sur un livret de Peter Sellars, l'argument de Doctor Atomic est basé sur l'histoire du Projet Manhattan au moment de l'essai Trinity et en particulier de son acteur scientifique principal que fut Robert Oppenheimer et raconte les dernières heures précédant l'essai de la bombe atomique américaine à l'été 1945 dans le désert du Nouveau Mexique, cette même bombe qui touchera Hiroshima en août 1945. La remarquable distribution, avec notamment le baryton canadien Gerald Finley dans le rôle du « savant fou » Robert Oppenheimer et la soprano américaine Julia Bullock dans le rôle de sa femme, est portée par les BBC Singers et le BBC Symphony Orchestra brillamment dirigé par John Adams en personne..
