Major figure of conceptual abstraction, David Diao questions the customs and institutions of the art world.

Archive documents, photographs, lists, sales datas, artists' careers, biographies - including his own - provoke a radical change in the approach that we have of painting. The documents are here reproduced on a sophisticated monochrome background, and their value is informative as well as aesthetic. Diao gives its conceptual value to painting : based on information and content. But if there is, in Diao's work, a central place accorded to information, there is also the unyielding presence of painting, which makes the role of documents more complex to explain, as shown in the different contributions to this book.

This volume is based on the conferences of the international symposium « Painting and Document : David Diao », that took place in 2014 in Strasbourg.
