Magellan's Circumnavigation

The North Polar projection of this map emphasises the perilous scope of Magellan's expedition around the Globe : out of the five ships and 237 sailors that skirted the coasts of South America toward the pacific, only one vessel and 18 men returned home safely. On September 6^th 1522, 1080 days after it first set sail, the Victoria arrived in Spain bearing 533 quintals of cloves. The father of the first circumnavigation, Magellan Himself, died on the island of Mactan in the Philippines over a year before the Victoria ever reached Spanish waters. Illustrations added to the map by Heinrich Scherer allude to the evangelical missions of the Jesuits, which catalyzed many expeditions of the 16^th Century.
