Gateway to Africa. Cultural Exchanges Across the Cataracts - Proceedings of the International Conference

« Gateway to Africa.

“Gateway to Africa. Cultural Exchanges Across the Cataracts” examines a series of case studies focusing on three specific aspects of the Ancient and Modern Nubian history: its administration and economy, how cross-cultural contacts developed through time, and how interconnections within religious believes entangled in the complexity of this region. Additionally, Nubia, a natural crossroad between the Middle East and Africa, is an ideal territory to explore how and to what extent these dynamics influenced—and were influenced by—its neighbouring regions. To detect how these socio-economic, political, cultural, and religious dynamics occurred, changed, and evolved through time, this volume proposes a diachronic analysis in the longue durée: from Antiquity until more modern and contemporaneous historical phases. This volume, therefore, combines Archaeology, Egyptology as well as Medieval and Arabic Studies as a proxy to analyse regional changes, cultural dynamics, and social developments in the Nubian region through time.
