Carte - Mappa Mundi d’Ebstorf (Pochette)

Mappa Mundi d'Ebstorf

Ebstorfs Mappa Mundi

This huge mappa mundi dating back to the 13th century is one of the largest and most complex medieval maps known. The original was destroyed in 1943, but this reproduction made by konrad miller in 1898 allows us to contemplate the so-called « 'Ebstorf » map. Drawn according to the classical form in TO, the map mixes real countries and sacred lands, religious, ancient and scientific references. The world, whose real distances are not respected, is inserted into the body of Jesus. Much more than a map with which to find one's way, it is clearly a work with a philosophical and theological representation of the world.
