C'est deux ans après le décès de Louis XIV que Marin Marais publie son Quatrième Livre de Pièces de Viole. Il s'y affirme comme le maître du genre offrant à son public à la fois des pièces destinées à \"ceux qui sont avancés sur la Viole\" mais aussi aux musiciens les plus virtuoses. Sur le plan stylistique, les formes classiques y sont déformées, les suites ne respectant plus le schéma traditionnel et faisant appel de plus en plus aux pièces de caractère. Cette imagerie parfois fantasque apportée par ces nouvelles pièces et la liberté formelle affirmée trouvent leur apogée dans la surprenante Suitte d'un goût étranger dont la bonne trentaine de pièces aborde à la fois des tonalités inusitées jusque là et offre une multitude de caractères et d'évocations parfois exotiques. Et d'une façon nouvelle, un peu influencé par le genre des trios italiens, Marais conclût ce Quatrième Livre avec deux suites à trois violes, un genre qu'il affirme comme \" nouveau en France \".
